Sourced from average 65-year-old estate vines planted on rocky slate soils at 3,000 ft. above sea level. Vineyards are dry-farmed without use of pesticides or herbicides and then hand harvested. Fermented in stainless steel before aging for 10 months in French oak. Aromas and flavors of rich cherry and plum, accented by mint and orange peel. Soft tannins, juicy acidity, refreshing mineral notes and a smoky finish.
Deep, vivid ruby. Lively and perfumed on the nose, displaying ripe red fruit, lavender and spice aromas and a hint of smokiness. Supple and open-knit, offering concentrated, appealingly sweet cherry, black raspberry and candied licorice flavors that become spicier as the wine opens up. Finishes long, smooth and juicy with resonating floral and red fruit notes and well integrated tannins.
The 2018 Atteca feels more harmonious and fresher than the 2019 I tasted next to it, despite both having similar alcohol levels (15%) and almost the same acidity and pH parameters. One extra year in bottle has polished the tannins, and the cooler, even if more challenging year seems to have given it an extra spark. It's still a full-bodied and powerful Garnacha that can handle powerful food.
